Gaston County, on behalf of HHH, has been awarded a federal Historic Preservation Fund grant from the National Park Service and administered through the State Historic Preservation Office (HPO) of the North Carolina Office of Archives and History for the purpose of conducting an archaeological ground penetrating radar survey on portions of the grounds of the Peter Hoyle House. The purpose of the survey is to investigate a one acre or less area along the north central part of the grounds to determine if any historic features associated with the Hoyle household might be located within an area that could be impacted by proposed sewer lines and public restrooms. The Hoyle Historic Homestead is requesting a ground-penetrating radar archaeological survey of an area north of an existing fence line to determine if historic features associated with the Hoyle homestead exist on that portion of the property. This area will probably be impacted by a future sewer system and sewer lines measuring approximately 100 feet by 60 feet. This area has been intermittently shovel-tested but no full-scale archaeological survey has been conducted in this portion of the property. Located partially within the southwest corner of the project area is the “Memorial Hoyle Cemetery” which is a cemetery in name only; tombstones from a nearby property were donated to HHH and relocated to this spot after development disturbed their original location. There are no known graves on the HHH property and the GPR survey is not intended to be a cemetery study. |
